Traditional Music

There are two forms of music recognized to be the oldest forms of traditional Japanese music. They are shōmyō or Buddhist chanting, and gagaku or orchestral court music.The shamisen or samis, also called sangen  is a three-stringed, Japanese musical instrument derived from the Chinese instrument sanxian. It is played with a plectrum called a bachi.
